Title :  GWS House of Lords Debate

On the 28th June 2010 Lord Morris of Manchester tabled a question for debate in the House of Lords, his question was:

"To ask Her Majesty's Government whether, in addressing the problems and needs of veterans of the first Gulf War with still undiagnosed illnesses, they will be taking into account the findings of the congressionally mandated and funded US Research Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans' Illnesses, particularly those on exposures to pyridostigmine bromide and organophosphates."

Much of the discussion was based around the American Institute of Medicines (IOM) report on Gulf War and Health published in April. The MoD had previously stated that they would review the new findings from America once the IOM had published this new report.

Other Lords including Lord Craig of Radley, Lord Lloyd of Berwick, Lord Tyler, and Lord Mackay of Clashfern then backed the points raised by Lord Morris, adding their own concerns.

Unfortunately the MoD's and the new Government stance on Gulf War Syndrome does not appear to have been swayed by the mounting evidence as the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Defence gave a long protracted statement concluding that:

"There is insufficient credible evidence to suggest that we should treat this group differently from other groups of veterans who report similar health problems."

The NGVFA ask that members of the Association and supporters of this cause read through the discussion, and contact their local MPs with details of the House of Lords Discussion, Institute of Medicine Report and the RAC report asking them to act, on behalf of yourself and fellow Veterans.
